About
What is Open Mic Scout?
Open Mic Scout is a podcast, produced several times a week, that focuses on open mics - shows where anyone can perform simply by showing up. The show is recorded, produced, and hosted by E Einowski, in Portland, Oregon, at local bars and other open mic venues.
The show features a combination of music and poetry. Depending on the open mic, each show runs about an hour to two hours and features a wide variety of artists. A photo of each performing artist and their website (when possible) is included in each podcast.
E Einowski is the founder and editor-in-chief of WikiRecording, the free online guide to audio recording that anyone can edit. He prides himself on promoting community in music and teaching artists how to approach and adapt to a fast changing music industry through education, creative marketing, and respecting the listener.
Contacting Open Mic Scout
Open Mic Scout wouldn’t exist without the support of its artists and listeners! We are always looking for new open mics and live shows to record. There are several ways to contact Open Mic Scout:
Email: Send a message to openmicscout@openmicscout.com
AIM: Say hi to the E directly! Screenname: ArthurPhilDent
How The Show Is Produced
Open Mic Scout is produced using very high end portable recording equipment.
The show is recorded on a Macintosh MacBook Pro 17″, using Digital Performer, the Motu 8 Pre. The podcast it produced using Apple’s SoundTrack.
Microphones: Shure Beta 58, Shure SM 57, 2 Shure PG 81s, and in a pinch 3 Nady SP-5s.
The Mixing is done in Digital Performer and is done at breakneck speeds. To give an idea of the speeds we are working at, imagine mixing 3 CDs worth of music every 3 to 4 days. Needless to say, the mixes aren’t perfect, but they are getting better as time goes on.
Hosting: Hosting for the Coverville site is provided by Hostbaby, who provdes excellent services and the best customer support I have ever experienced. Hostbaby is highly recommended for hosting any site, though the specialize in Musician/Band websites.
The Creative Commons License
All of the recordings I have done are played on the podcast with permission from the artists. As of November 13th, 2007 all of the music played on the show is licensed under the Creative Commons “Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 Unported” license.
Here is a quick summery of what this license allows:
- You are free to Share - to copy, distribute, and transmit the work.
- You are free to Remix - to adapt the work
Under the following conditions:
- You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).
- If you alter, transform, or build upon this work, you may distribute the resulting work only under the same, similar or a compatible license.
- For any reuse or distribution, you must make clear to others the license terms of this work. The best way to do this is with a link to this web page: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/
- An of the above conditions can be waived if you get permission from the copyright holder.
- Nothing in this license impairs the author’s moral rights.
If an artist wants their recording removed from the podcast, this is possible, although I strongly discourage this, because it would likely mean for logistical purposes that I would have to remove that entire episode from the site. This would hurt all of the artists involved. But if the request is made, I will make the change.
Our goal is to give every artist that we record free publicity and exposure to a wide audience that would otherwise never get to hear their music. In exchange, we ask for understanding that we are a very small and poorly funded operation, so any special requests from the artists will be considered, but we are not always able to comply.
We encourage the use of our recordings for artist’s own albums, as long as the recording is attributed to Open Mic Scout and there is a link to this website. Mixing and mastering of an individual track is available upon request and for a reasonable fee.
Requests bundled with donations of any size are given priority:
