FAQ
- What is a Podcast?
According to www.podcastingnews.com:
Podcasting is delivering audio content to iPods and other portable media players on demand, so that it can be listened to at the user’s convenience. The main benefit of podcasting is that listeners can sync content to their media player and take it with them to listen whenever they want to. Because podcasts are typically saved in MP3 format, they can also be listened to on nearly any computer.
Wikipedia has a more technical definition:
A podcast is a digital media file, or a related collection of such files, which is distributed over the Internet using syndication feeds for playback onportable media players and personal computers. The term, like “radio“, can refer either to the content itself or to the method by which it is syndicated; the latter is also termed podcasting. The host or author of a podcast is often called a podcaster. The term “podcast” is a portmanteau of the words “iPod” and “broadcast“,[1] the Apple iPod being the brand of portable media player for which the first podcasting scripts were developed (see history of podcasting). These scripts allow podcasts to be automatically transferred to a mobile device after they are downloaded.[2]Though podcasters’ web sites may also offer direct download or streaming of their content, a podcast is distinguished from other digital media formats by its ability to be syndicated, subscribed to, and downloaded automatically when new content is added, using an aggregator or feed reader capable of reading feed formats such as RSS or Atom. In a nutshell, for listeners of this podcast, it means that you can automatically download the latest recordings right to your computer and listen to them wherever you feel like it!
- How do I listen to the Podcast?
The preferred way to listen to the Open Mic Scout podcast is to subscribe to it using iTunes (http://www.apple.com/iTunes) which is available for free download and is far and wide the most commonly used music program. If you Click This Link to Subscribe iTunes should automatically open and start downloading the latest edition.
If you don’t feel like installing iTunes, the QuickTime Player will also play the files. For most users, this is already installed on your computer. Go to the Downloads page to find the links to all the podcasts.
You can also listen to the podcasts directly on our websites flash player to your right –> (however, it is the mp3 version of the podcast which doesn’t include links to the artists or the photos. It also tends to be updated after the main podcast…these things take time you know…)
Note to linux/freeBSD/Unix users: Your own your own…if your awesome enough to be using those operating systems, you should already know what a podcast is, how to play it, and your probably already producing your own. I commend you for your committment to the open source movement.
- Why isn’t the newest podcast playing in the websites player?
The websites player, due to some annoying problems with flash, does not play the acc files that are the lifeblood of this podcast. Instead, it plays an mp3 version of the podcast, which gets updated after the other version of the podcast.
- I was recorded for the podcast and I want to put one of the songs on my website/myspace page… can I get an mp3 of it?
The short and the long answer is YES!…soon. We’re working on making a downloads page that will automate the rather tedious process of making the individual tracks available to everyone, but these things take time. Check back often!
- Where and when do you record?
We record every Tuesday night at 8 at Zilla Saké ( www.zillasake.com ) and every Wednesday night around 9 at the Hawthorne Theater. Everyone is always welcome!
