Open Mic Scout Highlights

As I’ve listened to the Podcast over the week, I find myself skipping to certain songs, as I’m sure other do as well!

So I’m going to throw together a second podcast, which I am going to call Open Mic Scout Highlights.  It will feature my favorite acts from that Podcast and should be more suited to the casual listener who wasn’t at that particular open mic.
It should be a good way to get people hooked and won’t take much time to throw together.  Not to mention, it will be a smaller download, which I know is an issue for some people.
At first I was worried, because I don’t like to pass judgement on people’s music when doing a project like this.  I know my opinion of music is not the end all be all and one of my goals is to have everything I record available to everyone (with permission of course.) That will be covered by the original podcast.
Also, its good for all artists to be able to hear what they sounded like after the fact.  It helps artists to get a better understand of how they sound live, what they are good at, and what they need to work on.  And that is really what Open Mics are about.  Its a place where people can go to get practice performing in front of an audience with minimal pressure.  A place where people expect you to suck and you can surprise them by being just a little awesome.

Open Mic Scout 1st Edition Now Online!

I thought I’d consolidate the last couple of blog entries into one neat and tidy one. Here’s the news:

  • The First Edition of the Open Mic Scout Podcast, Recorded at Zilla Sake on October 23rd, 2007, is online.  The sound quality rocks for most of the songs, sans some minor technical difficulties.
  • You can subscribe to the Podcast with this link: Subscribe to Podcast
  • The Podcast, as of Sunday, October 28, 2007, has been downloaded 184 times!
  • You can stream the Podcast by clicking the “Listen Now” button to the left (it will open a new window so you can continue to listen after leaving this site.)
  • The artists on the first Podcast: The Crow’s Feet, Sallie Burgess, Kevin, Matty V, Piepo, Cameron, Warra Hugh, Heather, Grace, Mathew Gilbert, Elliot King, Kayla.
  • We have a logo which I designed.  I am not an artist.  Please, if you are an artist, design one for me (similar dimensions please) and I will love you forever and probably give you a special gift (said gift yet to be determined.)
  • If you want the original multi-track recording your song, please email me.  If your an artist, you should already have my email address from the multiple emails I sent out.  I’m not charging for these recordings per-say, but I would a donation of any size would greatly help me keep doing this project (currently I am doing it for free and without ads.)
  • Please, if you like what I am doing, donate using the pay pal button I soon will put up. Any amount will help, from a dollar to one hundred, every little bit helps.  This podcast is a lot of work.  To give you an idea: it took 3 hours of setup and recording per podcast and over 14 hours of mixing/mastering to post the first edition.  I love this work, but I need to bring in some money to keep this project alive and updated regularly.
  • Comment!  I would love the artists and listeners to be active in the blog!  Artists: Tell us the names of the songs, or the stories behind them.  Or if your name was misspelled.  Listeners: Tell us your favorite songs!  Comment on the sound quality of the podcast.  Tell me you love me!  Really, I could use all the encouragement I can get at this point.

The next 2 recording dates are as follows: Tuesday at Zilla Saké on NE 18th and Alberta around 7-8ish (dress as your favorite dead rock star!) and Wednesday at the Hawthorne Theater (its my first time running sound there, so it might be a little touch and go.)Thanks for all the music and all the support!Your friendly neighborhood recording engineer,E Einowski

Zilla’s Open Mic, October 23rd, 2007

Welcome to the first Edition of the Open Mic Scout Podcast. I just spent around 11 hours mixing and mastering the first of the recordings. It was a rough night to mix because of the variety of setups used during the night, but most of the mixes turned out OK. If I had more time to mix, they’d sound a lot better, but ce la vi, this is how it must be.

Here’s the link to download the podcast! Its about 80Mbs, so remember to left click and choose “Download linked file” or “Save linked file as…” etc. It’ll open easily with itunes, use any other program at your own risk!

Download Podcast!

Currently this is not actually a Podcast, but more of a blog with a download link. Thats only because I don’t feel like setting up the RSS feed, designing the logo, and getting it up on iTunes (which will take weeks anyway.)

I’ll edit this post sometime tomorrow, I’m sure, and put up the pictures from the night, etc.

Please if you are an artist, help me respell your names and maybe even give me song names. I’m gonna have to redo alot of this one simply because the photo’s don’t seem to line up with the artist playing. Most people won’t notice, but I’m sure the artists will be like “wait, thats not me…”

And if you feel so inclined, add comments to this blog post and tell everyone who your favorite performer of the night was! I’m sure every one of these fantastic artists could use your encouragement.

And I really do mean fantastic artists. As far as an open mic to start this podcast goes, I couldn’t have asked for better.
